Violent Crimes in Jennings

December 18, 2009 |10:09 | Violents  By : Team X

After four unsolved violent crimes in the last two weeks, Jennings Police are feeling frustrated and worried. The most recent crime occurred late Monday night in the 400 block of King Street. Police responded to a report of gunshots. No one was injured. Last week, one man had been shot in the hand.  Another man showed up at the hospital with a stab wound to his neck. A fourth case involves a man who sustained a gunshot wound to his leg on Shirley drive. Authorities think other people, besides the victims, have more information, but are afraid to be labeled as snitches. "It's getting worse where victims of crimes want to not cooperate with law enforcement out of fear or retribution or just the possibility that they want to take matters into their own hands" says Detective Danny Semmes.

Use initials instead of first names on mailboxes and phone listings. Avoid remaining alone in an apartment laundry room or parking garage. Never admit on the telephone or at the door that you are alone.

It is risky to accept a ride home from someone you have just met. If you decide to physically resist assault, remember that your goal should be to incapacitate the attacker long enough to run to safety and get help.

If you have been a victim of sexual assault, call the police immediately. Do not bathe or change clothes or you may destroy evidence.

Its detectives focus mostly on crimes against children, including possession of child pornography and enticement.

Since it was formed in 2007, the task force has conducted hundreds of investigations, leading to dozens of convictions and to the identification of 24 child victims. But the detectives acknowledge they’re only reaching the tip of the iceberg. Nearly fourth months ago, the Mid-Missouri Internet Crime Task Force learned that it would lose a detective to budget cuts, shortening their team to four members. However, despite the loss of a peer, team members say the internet crime team has actually remained relatively bullet proof in a time when most programs are under the financial gun. The mid-Missouri task force receives money both through government funding and annual private donation requests. Task force coordinator Andy Anderson says that although the team lost a member, it has been fortunate to receive funds during a recession.
