Crime Prevention

August 28, 2009 |10:22 | News  By : Team X

Crime is a word that invokes both fear and acceptance in society. Statistically your chances of becoming a victim of crime in any given year are actually pretty low. I'm sure this is a great comfort to anyone who has been victimized or knows someone who has been. On the surface many crimes seem random and senseless, but when we take a look at the factors that make up a crime we see a pattern emerge. In order for a crime to occur there are three factors that must be present. They are; Motive, Opportunity and a Victim.

Each of these factors plays an important role in how and why crimes occur. Two of these factors are within your control to influence. Motive is what drives the criminal to commit the crime. Motives are as individual as the criminal and beyond your ability to effectively control. Some common themes are drugs, money, sex, violence, power, domination, etc. That doesn't mean you shouldn't attempt to understand some of the social issues surrounding the psychology of crime. It just means that knowing your attacker is a crack addict with an addiction to feed is the last thing you are worrying about when he is stealing your purse at knife point.

Protect yourself From Being a Victim of Gangs and Crime

August 27, 2009 |10:48 | News  By : Team X

Crime amongst young people is on the increase. It means doing something that is against the law and can lead to serious consequences, such as a prison sentence. Fear of becoming the victim of crime is also on the increase and is often a contributing factor to young people getting involved in criminal behaviour. This often involves carrying knives or other weapons and becoming members of gangs for protection. This often creates further difficulties, as young gang members may be forced to engage in other forms of criminal behaviour such as taking or selling drugs, vandalism, shop lifting, burglary and physically assaulting members of the public or rival gangs.

Violence and Crime Against Women Must Stop!

August 25, 2009 |09:47 | News  By : Team X

In 1994, Legislation was passed which paved the way for the Violence Against Women Act. This Legislation provided $1.6 billion to enhance investigation and prosecution of the violent crimes perpetrated against women. However, the heinous crimes against women continue to increase each year. Preliminary results for the first half of 2006 revealed that there was a 3.7 percent increase in all violent crimes compared to the first half of 2005.

Here are some appalling statistics in the U.S. Every three minutes a woman is attacked in the United States. Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner. Conservative estimates indicate that two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. An estimated 572,000 assaults were by intimate partners. Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, which approximates 1,400 women a year according to the FBI. Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year approximately 1.2 million women report being forcibly raped by their current or former male partner. Approximately 17 percent of pregnant women report being battered. The results of the battering include miscarriages, stillbirths and a two to four times greater likelihood of the baby having a low birth weight.

The Reality of Street Fighting for Martial Artists

August 24, 2009 |11:21 | News  By : Team X

The world can be a dangerous place. Without warning, many people find themselves in situations they cannot handle. It can happen all at once. One moment everything is calm and nice. The next second your world explodes into pain. It could be some passing thug that attempts to steal your purse or grab your wallet. It can be a drunken belligerent man at the bar looking for a fight. It could be anything and it can happen to anyone. Do not think you are safe because it has never happened to you. Violence only takes one time to happen to change your life. A real fight on the street can mean either spending a lot of time in jail or the hospital.

It is not all just doom and gloom. There are ways to defend yourself. The first step is to have the proper knowledge. The second step is to take action with that knowledge. When fighting in the street or at some local bar, things happen dramatically faster than they do on television or in a movie. The key is to have the right kind of training. Once you have trained enough, executing the proper moves over and over again, your instinct will take over and the thought process is taken out of the equation. This rapidly speeds up the reaction time of an individual and this makes survival that much more likely.

Pedal power is helping to cut street crimes

August 22, 2009 |11:28 | News  By : Team X

A TEENAGER was given a street caution for cannabis possession after a police officer on one of the force's new pushbikes cycled past her and smelled the drug.
The 17-year-old girl received the caution following the incident in Welland Park, Harborough, last Thursday at about 12.50pm.

Police are hailing it as the latest example of how the new bikes introduced in Harborough earlier this summer – are helping beat bobbies fight crime in the town.

Speaking about Thursday’s incident, Sgt Pete Jelbert, of Harborough police, said: “We wouldn’t have detected the drugs had it not been for the bike. You’d never have got a car in there and if an officer had walked through the park the drugs would have been long gone by the time they got there. But with the bike the officer was able to get there so quickly the smell of the drugs was still in the air.

Crime Never Pays

August 21, 2009 |09:53 | News  By : Team X

Crime is a bad thing. And the previous sentence was an understatement, and an inaccurate description of the concept of Crime.

When someone commits a crime he or she, for sure, has broken a law that applies to the place and situation he or she is in. The principal statement of crime is that, if there is a law that is broken, there must be retribution, or justice meted.

Quick question. You run a red light. This means you have broken traffic laws. Does this mean you are a criminal? Probably not.
