Crime falls to lowest since 1981-survey

July 15, 2010 |16:10 | Reports  By : Team X

The level of crime in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest since records began in 1981, figures showed on Thursday. The British Crime Survey (BCS) showed offences fell by 9 per cent to 9.6 million in 2009/10, allaying fears a deep recession would cause a jump in offences.

The BCS is a collation of people's perceptions of crime and is one of the largest social surveys conducted in Britain. It is not related to actual crime figures, however. Actual crimes recorded by police forces across England and Wales fell by eight per cent to 4.3 million offences, a separate report showed.

Home office officials said there had been a "notable" fall in theft, burglary and fraud, but that levels of violent crime were largely unchanged. Both sets of crime figures show the number of offences is lower than when the last Labour government came to power in 1997.

Former War Crimes Prosecutor Expects Enforcement of Sudan Arrest Warrants

July 13, 2010 |16:32 | Reports  By : Team X

The former chief prosecutor for the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal for Sierra Leone said African countries have the political will to enforce the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.

David Crane, professor of law at Syracuse University, told VOA he was impressed and encouraged by the positive response and contribution of African countries at a recent two-week conference that was held in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

The conference reviewed the Rome Statute focusing on the crime of aggression. Professor Crane said there is a need for justice for the people of Darfur. “The arrest warrant related to the genocide charge captures the entire event that took place in Darfur and the Sudan. It is important for justice that all of the crimes that were committed in Darfur actually be charged so that the full truth can come out. So, I think this is a rounding out, a natural extension of what has taken place in Darfur,” Professor Crane said.

War crimes suspect averts extradition from Australia

July 3, 2010 |17:47 | Reports  By : Team X

A man wanted in Hungary for the torture and killing of a Jewish teenager during World War II averted extradition Friday after an Australian federal court ruled in his favor, an Australian news agency reported. Hungary issued a warrant for Perth resident Charles Zentai, 88, in 2005. He is suspected of being a Nazi collaborator who killed Peter Balazs in Budapest in November 1944, the Australian Associated Press said.

Zentai is on the list of most wanted Nazis compiled by the Simon Weisenthal Center, which first discovered Zentai in Australia in 2004. The Jewish human rights organization accuses Zentai of participating in manhunts of Jews as well as persecution and murder.

But Australian Judge Neil McKerracher found several problems with the extradition order, AAP said. He ruled that it would be inhumane to send Zentai back to Hungary, given his old age and poor health. His family released medical records that showed Zentai had suffered a stroke and has numerous broken ribs, CNN affiliate ABC News reported.

New crime laws costly - Lamrock

May 4, 2010 |16:34 | Reports  By : Team X

The federal government's plan to get tough on crime may be popular with Canadian voters, but New Brunswick Justice Minister Kelly Lamrock says it could cost the province millions and won't have the desired effect of reducing crime.

The federal Conservatives have introduced a number of different bills in recent weeks as a part of their tougher stance on crime, which was one of their stated priorities when first elected in 2006. The measures include mandatory sentences for certain crimes, removing the two-for-one credit for time served before a trial and an end to the "faint hope" clause, which lets some inmates serving life sentences apply for parole after 15 years, instead of the standard 25.

Kevin Page, the Parliamentary Budget Officer, forecasted last week the cost of implementing just one of the Tories' tough-on-crime bills could be between $7 billion and $10 billion during the next five years. That could cost New Brunswick $250 million a year, Lamrock says.

Crime stats show stability

April 20, 2010 |17:36 | Reports  By : Team X

In the two years to December, crime remained stable in most categories, although police are concerned about a 12 per cent rise in shoplifting across the region. The Bureau of Crime Statistics' director, Don Weatherburn, says overall Newcastle had a good result.

"It is a great change and you know if trends continue the way they are then there's every reason to hope for a down trend in non-domestic assault," he said. "Newcastle I'm sure has had more than its fair share of alcohol-related assaults and I'm sure everyone [can] see the trend go down. "It's nice enough to see it stable but we really want to see it go down." Meanwhile, Upper Hunter police say a massive spike in motor vehicle theft has prompted several crackdowns across the region.
