Violent Crime Victims Use Art to Cope

April 16, 2010 |14:28 | News | Violents  By : Team X

Victims of violent crimes have very different ways of healing. Some turn to drugs or alcohol, while some people in Minnesota turn to art. “Some of people participating don’t even consider themselves artists,” said Sue Gens, Executive Director of the Minnesota Arts Board. Friday, April 16 will mark the beginning of the 7th annual Art of Recovery Exhibit.

The exhibit is cosponsored by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. The exhibit runs until June 30th. All 23 artists in the collection are from Minnesota and have been victims of crimes ranging from rape to murder.

“It’s nice to know you are not alone,” says Grant Watkins. Watkins is one of the artists participating in the Art of Recovery exhibit for the first time. He wrote a poem about being violently raped by a man 20 years ago. “It was horrific, it was suffocating, and chocking me and piling all these pillows on top of me and strangling me.”

Sex Crimes and the Vatican

April 12, 2010 |13:44 | News | Violents  By : Team X

In recent weeks, the Vatican and in particular the Pope, have found themselves at the centre of a growing controversy about how they've dealt with pedophile priests and the children abused by those priests. First aired on the BBC in 2006 and later on.

The Passionate Eye on CBC Newsworld, "Sex Crimes & the Vatican" examines a controversial document which sets out a procedure for dealing with child sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church. What makes it so controversial is that the document Crimen Sollicitationis was enforced for 20 years by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI.

Created in 1962, the now infamous document was issued in secret to bishops. Called Crimen Sollicitationis, it outlined procedures to be followed by bishops when dealing with allegations of child abuse, homosexuality and bestiality by members of the clergy. It swore all parties involved to secrecy on pain of excommunication from the Catholic Church.

Crime figures reflect violent generationThe son of murdered school teacher Lois Dear says we need to write off a generation of violent criminals and concentrate on at-risk youth.

Kevin McNeil, whose 66-year-old mother was brutally murdered in her Tokoroa classroom in 2006 by Whetu Te Hiko, said early intervention was the key to addressing rising crime rates.

Speaking today after the release of police figures which showed a nine percent increase on violent crime last year, Mr McNeil said drug and welfare dependent criminals were already beyond help.

Les crimes violents en hausse

March 16, 2010 |10:25 | Violents  By : Team X

When is a Crime Not a Crime?

March 15, 2010 |10:27 | Violents  By : Team X

If you buy something advertised to do specific things and then find out that it is completely different to your expectations that would not necessarily be a crime. But if the advertisement targets a specific need, such as a cure for something, but it did not cure it that would that be a crime. It is misrepresentation and many suffer the consequences of such frauds every day.

Thieving is an easily recognizable crime. But what if something was stolen a long time ago? Is it still a crime? Yes, and the perpetrators face penalties if caught. The same applies to murder, rape, or any other crime against society. Those associated with crime or who assist criminals in any way may be equally as guilty unless they know nothing of it.

Violent Crimes in Jennings

December 18, 2009 |10:09 | Violents  By : Team X

After four unsolved violent crimes in the last two weeks, Jennings Police are feeling frustrated and worried. The most recent crime occurred late Monday night in the 400 block of King Street. Police responded to a report of gunshots. No one was injured. Last week, one man had been shot in the hand.  Another man showed up at the hospital with a stab wound to his neck. A fourth case involves a man who sustained a gunshot wound to his leg on Shirley drive. Authorities think other people, besides the victims, have more information, but are afraid to be labeled as snitches. "It's getting worse where victims of crimes want to not cooperate with law enforcement out of fear or retribution or just the possibility that they want to take matters into their own hands" says Detective Danny Semmes.

Suggestions On How To Avoid Being A Victim Of Violent Crimes

December 15, 2009 |09:30 | Violents  By : Team X

Use initials instead of first names on mailboxes and phone listings. Avoid remaining alone in an apartment laundry room or parking garage. Never admit on the telephone or at the door that you are alone.

It is risky to accept a ride home from someone you have just met. If you decide to physically resist assault, remember that your goal should be to incapacitate the attacker long enough to run to safety and get help.

If you have been a victim of sexual assault, call the police immediately. Do not bathe or change clothes or you may destroy evidence.

Violence and Crime Against Women Must Stop!

October 23, 2009 |09:56 | Violents  By : Team X

In 1994, Legislation was passed which paved the way for the Violence Against Women Act. This Legislation provided $1.6 billion to enhance investigation and prosecution of the violent crimes perpetrated against women. However, the heinous crimes against women continue to increase each year. Preliminary results for the first half of 2006 revealed that there was a 3.7 percent increase in all violent crimes compared to the first half of 2005.

Here are some appalling statistics in the U.S. Every three minutes a woman is attacked in the United States. Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner. Conservative estimates indicate that two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. An estimated 572,000 assaults were by intimate partners. Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, which approximates 1,400 women a year according to the FBI. Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year approximately 1.2 million women report being forcibly raped by their current or former male partner. Approximately 17 percent of pregnant women report being battered. The results of the battering include miscarriages, stillbirths and a two to four times greater likelihood of the baby having a low birth weight.
