Karan was born to a highly respectable orthodox Brahmin parents in a remote village called Gorur in Karnataka, a southern India state. Right from his child hood Karan was a very disciplined, studious and god fearing person. He migrated to city of Bangalore to pursue his higher education. He did his bachelor degree in philosophy and went on to complete masters with distinction. He got appointed as professor in a reputed college in Bangalore. He got married to a very shy, middle class Brahmin girl named Radha, who was a typical south Indian home maker. In his spare time Karan use to teach vedhas/upanishads and was always advocating theory of Karma to his disciples.
The couple led a very normal and modest living .Their first and only child was born after 3 years of their married life. It was the most memorable moment when the little cradler arrived on the seen. He was christened Anirudh (Name of the son of Lord Krishna). Anirudh like his parents was a very charming likable little boy always in the news for his brilliant academics and sporting activities in the school. He grew up as a handsome man with all the characteristics of a 'lady killer'.
While in college he fell in love with a charming girl whose name was Urvashi, meaning most beautiful. After completing their education and settling down, they wanted to get married with the blessings of elders. Urvashi was staying alone in a rented house which was in a remote area. Her family was staying in a village nearby, being land lords of considerable repute. There was a Romeo studying in the same college by name Durjan Singh He was the son of a rich and highly influential politician. Durjan Singh had an eye on this beautiful woman and tried to make advances but the charming lady refused to talk to him. The Romeo was quiet upset and was intending to physically harm the couple. Several verbal threats were made on them. Unable to tolerate the harassment, the couple had to approach police for protection. Initially the police were reluctant to register their complaint, for fear of repression, as the person was the son of a highly influential politician. However there was an upright police officer named Vijay who took initiative and lodged an FIR. Durjan Singh was summoned to the police station and questioned. He was let off after a stern warning and written apology to the girl. Durjan Singh nursed a revenge to teach the couple, a lesson using his father's political clout.
Murder
One day on a chilling night, the police received information about the murder of that young lover couple in the girl's house. When the police rushed to the spot they found half naked body of Urvashi with her duppatta tied round her neck and saliva oozing out of her mouth. The body of Anirudh was seen in a sitting pose with head leaning to the wall and blood splattered on it. The investigating police officer Vijay conducted a complete search of the area and collected each and every details at the seen of the murder. Possibility of RAPE of the girl was not ruled out. After conducting the mahazar, the police called in forensic experts. They collected hair samples, finger prints, traces of sperm etc; and sent the bodies for post martem.Police sniffer dogs were pressed into service to locate in the culprit but they could not do so.Mean while, Anirudh parents rushed to the seen of the murder on information from the police. The mother fainted on seeing her son's blood spilt body and that of his fiancé's. Father was dumb struck and appeared to be in total shock. Hundreds of well wishers gathered at the crime spot and demanded immediate arrest of the guilty.
Conspiracy
The police officer who had earlier conducted enquiry was secretly tapping the phone calls made by Durjan Singh. Just a day prior to the murder, Durjan Singh had spoken to a notorious contract killer by name Abhayankar, who was on police records. Durjan Singh was out of town prior to the murder of the 2 couples. He had accompanied his father to a political rally. The police officer was convinced that the murder has been committed by Abhayankar, the contract killer, at the behest of Durjan Singh who had cleverly planned the conspiracy and has gone out of town to mislead the police. However the police officer was in a dilemma whether to arrest Durjan Singh on his return, because the pressure was mounting from the public for his arrest and the police officer has to be very cautious as there was no material evidence of his involvement in the murder, as he was away attending to his father's political rally prior and after the crime. The police officer had no other go except to hunt for Abhayankar and arrest him to get the truth. The officer again started taping the phone calls of Durjan sing. Even though number of calls was made, Durjan Singh could not get the connection to the Abhayankar's mobile number. Hence the police officer was totally in dark about the where about of the contract killer. He was not to be seen any where in his locality. In the mean while the post mortem report had revealed that the girl was raped before her murder and the boy's death was due to severe concussion on the back of his head. The forensic report had indicated the presence of finger print and the traces of the sperm, on the girl's private parts, as that of a third person whose identity has to be found.
Due to immense pressure from the public and the opposition political parties, the police officer finally arrested Durjan Singh, based on his previous track record. On a sustained interrogation Durjan Singh admitted that he had hired the contract killer to finish off the young couples and has deliberately left the place prior to the planned murder to mislead the police and the public. However after the murder was committed, Durjan Singh could not trace the contract killer in spite of repeated attempts. Now the ball is in the police officer's court:
1. Is Abhayankar the real killer?
2. If not, who could have done it and why?
3. Whereabouts of Abhayankar after the crime?
4. Why Abhayankar did not contact Durjan Singh after committing the crime.
5. Why snuffer police dogs could not trace the track of the killer?
The police officer now started investigating other angles to the crime. The police had to produce Dhurjan Singh to magisterial court in order to get his remand extended as the investigation was incomplete. However Dhurjan Singh in front of the judge has told his highness that he was innocent and the police have fixed him on false charges and his confessional statement was done in duress. The lawyer representing Durjan Singh had applied for bail which was granted with the condition that he has to report to the jurisdictional police station once in a week and that he should not leave the head quarters till the investigation is complete and charge sheet framed.
Father of Anirudh had stepped up his campaign to prosecute the perpetrate of his son's killers and even met the home minister and demanded immediate action. Hundreds of sympathizers of Karan went on a dharna in front of police station and shouted slogans against the investigating officer Mr. Vijay. However Mr. Vijay was now seriously on a different track of the investigation. He personally called Mr. Karan to his chambers and offered him seat. He convinced him that the investigation is on a right track and requested him to be patient and cooperate. He went up to his alma rah to get the relevant case file. Suddenly thro' the mirror of the alma rah he saw Karan looking at a porn picture of a celebrity in a magazine kept on the police officer's desk with lured expressions and could not believe his eyes when he saw him giving kisses to that erratic picture in the magazine. Stunned Vijay took some time to reconcile to a perverted behavior of the professor, who was till then a picture of dignity and sober. Police officer on his return to his desk offered the professor a glass of hot coffee. After drinking the same he thanked the police officer and nervously bid good bye to him . Now Police officer's line of investigation has changed. He took the glass in which the professor had drunk the coffee to the forensic lab to get the finger print checked. After getting the forensic report he crosses checked the same with that of the one taken at the crime spot. To his astonishment the finger print tallied. Armed with this crucial evidence he planned to interrogate the professor in this sordid crime drama. An arrest warrant was obtained from the court based on this crucial evidence.
The police officer along with his team went to Karan's house and formally arrested him after showing arrest warrant .Amidst strong protest from his well-wishers, the professor was hand cuffed and taken in police jeep to the jurisdictional police station for detail interrogation. The professor was subjected to DNA test which confirmed the rape he committed on Urvashi. The finger prints collaborated that the girl was strangulated using her own duppatta and killed. After confirmation of his perverted sex behavior the police were now were very sure that he is the culprit in several unresolved murder cases . He was subjected to lie detection tests and brain mapping which confirmed his involvement in at least 3 more murders.
Back ground and confession
Professor Karan broke down after sustained police interrogation and narrated the saga of his crime and passion:
Karan as a boy was very brilliant,God fearing and disciplined. He was a roll model for the youths in his village. When he entered teen age he was a picture of poise, dignity and a very attractive look. There was a young Widow in the village whose married life was short lived. Her husband died at a very young age. she was a loner. However she was sex starved and befriended Karan as he entered teens and started seducing him to fulfill her sexual desires. Karan initially rebuffed her but the sexual urge which is natural at that age could not keep him in check. He succumbed to her overtones and started having regular inter course. One fine day the widow became pregnant and now she started pestering him to marry her. This was too much to digest for the young boy. His family reputation, the girl being older to him, her inferior caste all these factors made him to avoid her. However the girl started black mailing him and threatened to reveal their sex affair to the villagers. This infuriated the young Karan and he decided to eliminate her. As none of the villagers ever noticed the couples together, one night Karan went to her house and strangulated her to death and subsequently left the village and migrated to Bangalore for higher studies. The police were clue less about the culprit. After coming over to Bangalore his sexual urge could not be controlled, as at a very young age he got accustomed to sexual acts and thus he gradually became sex maniac and developed split personality. The sexual urge continued and he was involved in at least 2 more cases of similar sex crime, one with his teacher and later with one of his faculty. Both the cases were not resolved in police records.
Ever since his son Anirudh started dating the vivacious Urvashi, his evil eye had cast on her. Though openly he never objected to their union, he never wanted his son to marry her because he had made up his mind to enjoy her and fulfill his lust and dump her after wards, as he had done in the past. He was waiting for appropriate time to carry out his vicious desire.
On that fateful day, Karan asked his son to visit his native village Gorur and seek the blessings of their family deity before joining a newly got job. After his son left the city, he told his wife that he had to meet some persons for arranging discourse on Bhagavath Gita. Soon he left the house and arrived at Urvashi's residence .On seeing her would-be father in law, Urvashi was totally surprised and in a traditional way she bent down to take his blessings. The vulture in him made him grab her and within seconds Urvashi had fallen to the animal instinct of this sex maniac. After satisfying his lust he did not want her to survive and he wound her duppatta on her neck and was about to kill her when suddenly his son appeared. Anirudh on seeing his father's avatar could not believe his eyes but with lightening speed he tried to pull out his father but the barbarous and ruthless man pushed his son so hard that he fell backwards and his head jammed the wall and blood spilled like a fountain from his head. he died instantaneously. The beast finally killed Urvashi and got up and went to wash off his sins in the bathroom. At that point of time the contract killer Abhayankar just stepped into the house with a revolver in hand He was aghast to see the dead bodies of the couple whom he was supposed to kill and on seeing the real killer Karan, Abhayankar panicked, tripped and fell down. The revolver in his hand was thrown over and landed on Karan's side. Karan immediately grabbed the revolver and fired at Abhayankar which killed him instantly. Karan knew that Abhayankar was the yes man of Durjan Singh and had come to kill the couple. Karan dragged the dead body of Abhayankar and dumped into the water sump in the back yard and closed its cover lid. He threw his trousers into the sump, washed his hands and slowly walked out of the house making sure none has seen him. When he returned home his wife told him that his son Anirudh cancelled his Gorur trip and has gone to Urvashi's house on an urgent call from her.
Court verdict
With his confessional statement and forensic evidences, and his involvement in other 3 murder cases, the court gave its verdict for death sentence. While delivering final judgment the judge observed that while ordinary criminals with their known criminal background is less harmful to the society than a person, whom people liked as a god, would turn out to be such a vulturous beast, is more dangerous to the society and must be got rid off. This has been recorded as rarest of rare cases and pronounced that Karan should be " Hanged till death". The devote friends and relatives of Karan could not control their anger on the heinous crimes committed by him and they showed their frustration by burning his effigy and insulting his wife and even pelting stones at her residence. Radha who silently suffered the loss of her dear son and his fiancée and ignobility of seeing the treacherous side of his once revered husband, and the humiliation she suffered from near and dear once, totally made her heart broken and she died as a loner. Thus ended the saga of the family of Karan's, once respected in high esteem and bitten to dust by the same persons all due to man's uncontrolled animal instinct.
